How Do Health Insurance Quotes Work?
Say you're 40, self-employed and buying cover for yourself and two kids. A health insurance quote shows what a plan would cost each month for your household, along with its deductible, copays and the doctors in its network.
Unlike car or life insurance, ACA-compliant plans can't price you on your health. The quote depends on a short list of things set by law.
According to HealthCare.gov, Marketplace insurers can only set premiums using:
- Your age, with older adults charged up to three times as much as younger ones
- Where you live
- Tobacco use, which can add up to 50%
- Whether the plan covers just you or your family
- The plan category you choose
Your health, medical history and sex can't affect the price.
Not on an ACA-compliant plan. Insurers can't refuse to cover you, charge you more or exclude a condition you already have, and coverage for it starts the day your plan does. Short-term plans and some other products don't follow these rules, which the last section covers.
The insurer or a licensed agent or broker does. Covero isn't HealthCare.gov or a government agency; we point you to licensed partners, and you see quotes and enroll on the partner's own site. There's no cost to use Covero and no obligation to buy.
