How Do Car Insurance Quotes Work?
Say you've just bought a used sedan with a loan, and you need cover before you drive it home. A car insurance quote is an insurer's estimate of what the policy will cost, based on you, the car and the coverage you choose.
To compare quotes fairly, each one needs the same limits and deductibles. Otherwise you're comparing different products, and the cheapest-looking quote may simply cover less.
Have these ready and a quote takes a few minutes:
- Driver's license details for everyone who'll drive the car
- The vehicle identification number (VIN), or the year, make and model
- The address where the car is kept overnight
- Accidents, claims and tickets from the last few years
- Your current insurer and limits, if you have a policy
- Roughly how many miles you drive a year
Not your credit scores. Where insurers check credit, they typically use a soft inquiry, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that soft inquiries don't affect your credit scores. You can compare as many quotes as you like without that worry.
Each insurer has its own rating system. The NAIC, the national association of state insurance regulators, notes that how often drivers like you file claims is the biggest influence, and every insurer reads that data differently. That's why the NAIC suggests getting at least three quotes.
Covero isn't an insurer or an agency. We point drivers to licensed partners: you see quotes on the partner's own site, and the partner and its insurers set the price and decide on coverage. There's no cost to use Covero and no obligation to buy.
